Brian Ruryk's Guitar NoiseMagazine — MusicworksOne of the first spreads I sent to the editors of Musicworks after taking on the gig. Attempting to make a visual interpretation of a story about the work of a chaotic noise artist I thought: “Let’s see how much they’ll let me get away with.” This is a somewhat reined-in version of the original I sent to them, but I am still super impressed they let me get away with that final page — most writers/editors I have worked with get really rather anxious when they see that much that much white space. If I had to choose a Top 5 Moments in my portfolio that I thought were indicative of my approach to design, this would surely be one of them: to actually read and understand the work I’m laying out; to allow the story to influence the design as much as my own aesthetic does; and, to use the story as illustration and try to make it read like poetry. |
