Rachel Nolan: Travels was a fully working WordPress theme I made for a friend who was an aspiring travel writer, designed and coded by me. The inspiration for the front page came out of experiments I was doing exploring the Google Maps API and seeing how far you could push the design of live maps. The map on the front page was actually interactive, though it was extremely stripped down. The arrow pointers were automatically generated from information added to each blog post, so that as stories were added more arrows would appear on the map at the appropriate location, along with rollover effects, story title and blurb, and linked straight to the post. I also designed extensive controls for the typography and layout of each post’s hero section — pretty commonplace nowadays, but much less so in 2015.
